Passengers flying from Austin will soon have fewer direct flight options on a popular carrier. American Airlines has confirmed to Travel + Leisure that it will be discontinuing several nonstop routes, including flights to Las Vegas (LAS), Orlando (MCO), New Orleans (MSY), Reno (RNO), and Palm Springs (PSP).

Reduced Direct Flight Options from Austin

“As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American will reduce service from Austin (AUS) starting in October,” an American Airlines spokesperson told T+L. “We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

CEO’s Remarks

“We are taking this challenge head-on, with clear and decisive actions to deliver on a strategy that maximizes our revenue and profitability, and importantly, one that makes it easy for customers to do business with American,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom during a July 2024 earnings call.

Impact of Allegiant Airlines’ Decisions

This news comes just weeks after low-cost carrier Allegiant Airlines announced it would also be reducing routes and closing its crew base at Austin’s airport. Allegiant operates out of a terminal that will soon be closed for construction, a key factor in its decision.

Record Passenger Numbers at Austin Airport

The flight route adjustments by American Airlines do not appear to be due to soft demand. In fact, Austin Airport set a record in 2023, with 22 million passengers arriving and departing. The airport is also expanding its Terminal B and designing a new arrivals and departures hall.

Looking Ahead

While the reduction in direct flights may inconvenience some passengers, American Airlines is committed to optimizing its network for better profitability and customer service. The changes reflect broader trends in the airline industry as carriers adjust routes and services to align with evolving business strategies and infrastructure developments. Passengers are advised to stay informed about further updates and plan their travel accordingly.
