Travelers passing through New York’s bustling John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) are being cautioned about potential traffic woes at the hub, as significant construction projects loom, threatening to disrupt summer travel plans for millions of passengers.
The advisory from JFK comes as part of a massive $19 billion construction initiative aimed at modernizing passenger facilities. This ambitious project includes the construction of two new international terminals, the renovation of two existing terminals, the establishment of a new ground transportation center, and the development of new roadways, as disclosed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to Travel + Leisure. The warning coincides with projections of over 18 million travelers passing through JFK this summer, marking a record high and an increase of 700,000 travelers compared to the previous year.
In response to the anticipated disruptions, the Port Authority has announced round-the-clock staffing of its Airport Operations Center to facilitate airport-wide coordination and active traffic management. This proactive approach involves anticipating peak activity and implementing traffic mitigations to address increased wait times or queues. The agency also pledges to adjust roadway construction activities as necessary and coordinate flight operations, traffic delays, and public messaging.
Furthermore, the Port Authority is bolstering its frontline personnel, including Port Authority police officers, traffic managers, and terminal customer service representatives.
Acknowledging the inevitable challenges, Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized, “There’s no sugar coating the issue. Building a new airport while maintaining full flight operations won’t come without impacts to passengers driving to and from JFK Airport. But we believe that building what will be one of the truly great airports in the world will make these temporary traffic disruptions well worth the trouble for decades to come.”
To alleviate congestion, the Port Authority advises travelers heading to JFK to utilize public transportation options. Both the subway and the Long Island Rail Road provide direct access to the airport via the AirTrain. Additionally, passengers can opt to be dropped off at the Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain station, offering complimentary transportation to the terminals. In June, the Port Authority will unveil a new “Easy Lot” at the AirTrain station to facilitate smoother arrivals.
Upon completion of the project, JFK will boast a brand-new Terminal 1, a new Terminal 6 (interconnected with Terminal 5), an expanded Terminal 4, and a renovated Terminal 8, promising enhanced facilities and services for travelers.
